designing my sweet boy's room: traditional or modern?

Or a mix of both?

As I mentioned in this post, I plan to mix lots of antiques and traditional pieces with fun pops of modern in the new house. Whether it be lighting, fabric patterns, wall art, etc. I thought I had Cade's room all planned out for a while now...until we cleaned out my papa's house last weekend and I found a gorgeous antique twin bed hiding in a closet.

Total game changer.

I'm going to use a lot of the colors/items I already have in his room now, so I'm definitely continuing the navy + orange. Inspired by this room...

but also this. The bed I found looks very similar to this, I tried to email a pic to myself to post but my Hotmail is being crazy on my iPhone lately. What the heck? It's basically just a much darker wood than this, but I think it's so scratched I may paint instead of refinish. Is that terrible?

I had originally planned to buy a white, simple full bed to tie in some of his Ikea expedit furniture used for toy storage. This one is on sale for $279 from Home Decorators Collection. Now I'm second guessing myself and thinking the antique twin bed would 1. give him more room in his tiny room and 2. have more character, gorgeous obviously 3. free!

The color I've chosen for his room is Sherwin William's Amazing Gray. It's close to BM's Revere Pewter, which is what's in his room now and I absolutely love it. That color definitely lives up to all the hype. It's great. Also, if you haven't noticed I'm one of those "if it's ain't broke, why fix it?" people, so since I've loved some of the colors in our house now I'm just doing same thing in the new house. It's also just one shade up on the color card from the main living color, SW Worldly Gray.

Here's where we get into modern touches to even out the super traditional. I have already purchased West Elm's Milk Glass Globe pendant because I fell in love with it months ago, not even knowing for sure where I would put it. It was one of those "had to have" purchases and I snagged it on sale. I think it's going to go great in his room, then if and when he ever wants a ceiling fan, we can easily change because I didn't spend a fortune on this.

I have the Rugby Sriped Comforter in navy from Target in both a twin and a full, no matter what we decide. (Yes, I've got both. So cheap!) He's using the twin now.

Also have already purchased these cute car sheets from Garnet Hill, in full size, which are on sale now It ties in so many great colors, I hate not to use but I'm leaning more towards gingham sheets if use the antique bed. See where my dilemma comes into play? I love the "car theme" because I have found a lot of antique car ads that my dad collected. Plan to use those too! So neat.

I love Serena & Lily's Gingham Sheets in Navy...

or do I do green? Keep reading about his bathroom to see why I thought that may be an option.

We also have a small dresser that we currently use in our master bedroom and will put in Cade's new room and buy us a much-needed-bigger one. This is where I had the idea to just go ahead and paint both the dresser and twin bed a gorgeous navy! I've even seen the most amazing navy chalk paint. Love.

So as for where the "green" ties in, I've decided to "go green" with his bathroom vanity. It's actually a jack & jill bath shared with the other bedroom.

This is the exact color below that I chose, even though it definitely looks a tad darker on the paint card. Sherwin William's Dill.

and yes, it's a jack & jill bath so what happens if we have another baby one day with a completely different room design in the other bedroom? Well, he or she just better like green :) I think it's a perfect neutral, could go boy or girl depending on accessories in the bathroom. I also keep telling myself, "it's just paint", right?

Here's to hoping I can pull off the perfect mix of traditional and modern in little man's room. My thoughts are all over the place, I know. Stay tuned for what I decide to do...(well, and prayers I just make a decision, period) When did I become so indecisive???

  2. I bet you can pull it off, no doubt!! I love the idea of the twin bed & the dresser both being painted navy blue! Could be because we just picked out an adorable navy blue on Saturday for Jack's dresser in his nursery buuuut, hey it is a great color!! Plus, the twin bed would be something from your grandpa too! I think using some of the old/antique stuff mixed with the modern items is going to turn out great though!! Cannot wait to see how it all turns out!!
