We just returned from a quick vacation to Harbor Island, SC which is near Beaufort. It's just a few miles from Hunting Island, Fripp Island and about a 45 minute drive to Hilton Head Island. The hubs has just fallen in love with Beaufort since shrimping there with friends over the past few years. Last year we stayed at a B&B in Beaufort for our one year anniversary and then I totally realized just why Chad was so in love. After re-visiting this past week, I must admit, I think I've "fallen" too!
When our friends Blake and Beth invited us to come stay 1/2 week with them at a beach house on Harbor Island, we couldn't say no to the offer. It was the perfect relaxing and peaceful vacation that I enjoy. An uncrowded {nearly untouched} beach, calm waters, a chair, a book, Jack Johnson & Eric Hutchinson on the iPod and that's really all I needed. We'd stay on the beach all day and come in and cook dinner every night. We had lasagna, shrimp and grits, grilled hamburgers, and a huge shrimp boil while we were there. (I mean you gotta eat a lot of shrimp while in Beaufort. Just call me Bubba Gump because I like em' any way you can cook em' ... "boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp, coconut shrimp..." You get the point.)
During our stay the guys were obsessed with enjoyed fishing...
{that's the three amigos - Blake, Chad, and John Thomas - Beth's brother}
and we did a little shopping in Hilton Head too.
{Blake & Beth's daughter}
and we loved riding the golf cart and looking at all the beautiful houses.
This one was my favorite of course because it was turquoise and pink!

and here's a sunset on Harbor Island
This is an actual untouched photo I took Tuesday night. Absolutely stunning!
If you're looking for a great, relaxing family-friendly vacation, it doesn't get much better than Harbor Island. Southern Living even thinks so too...
"Find Your Secret Beach"
Best Beach for Families: Harbor Island, SC
Hidden between stately Beaufort and exclusive Fripp Island, this Lowcountry isle is a quiet place, with 3 miles of secluded beach visited mostly by pelicans, herons, and horseshoe crabs. Each day here begins with a sunrise that turns the Atlantic into a pink sea framed by golden marsh grass.
Harbor Island feels far away from it all, but not too far from the amenities that make a good family trip. Groups can bunk in low-rise villas or choose from a few dozen oceanfront homes large enough for family reunions. There's a community playground too.
Nearby attractions offer plenty to do. Explore Gullah culture on St. Helena Island, try a shrimp burger at the Shrimp Shack, climb the lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park. [we did that last year for our Anniversary] Later, get a sitter and join the throngs at Johnson Creek Tavern, Harbor's local dive. Beaufort's more sophisticated restaurants and shops are just 20 minutes away.
The perfect day here ends with the setting sun and the surprise that though you're only 50 miles from the crowds of Hilton Head, you're on a beach that feels like your own" www.beaufortsc.com
